The following overview will answer basic questions regarding our walking aids categories
» Folding Walkers
A folding walker is a basic four point walker which folds down in thirds so that you can pack away or carry when it is not in use. These lightweight walkers are narrow enough to fit through a standard doorway. Each side of the standard walker moves independently so that you can maneuver through tight spaces. Folding walkers come in different models: no wheels, two front wheels or 4 small wheels.
» 3 wheel Walkers
A rollator is a standard walker with three tires attached without seat. A three wheel rollator doesn't involve lifting that a folding walker requires. A rollator has the advantage of maneuverability and makes walking a smoother process. They can easily get around corners and tight spaces due to its smaller frame. Rollators are built with Adjustable telescoping aluminum supports. They are designed either with a locking handbrakes or spring-loaded push-down brakes to help control the movement. They fold in half when not in use for easy storage. They come usually with a tote bag for storage.
» 4 Wheel Walkers
A four wheel walker has the advantage of being more stable and offers more freedom to the user. They are folding walkers with four large tires attached. They come equipped with a seat so that the user can turn around and sit down as needed and most of them also come with a large basket or tote bag for storage purposes.
Four wheel walkers feature adjustable height handles with locking brakes. They can be folded and stored in car trunks or behind the rear seats.
Canes are perfect for those that need a little balancing and assistance with walking. Walking canes come in a variety of styles and colors:
Single point cane is a walking stick with a rounded or flat handle. Users can lean on it for balance. We carry specialty canes that you can open up into mini seats, and folding canes for easy storage.
Quad cane has four tips which provide extra stability when walking. They come in small or large bases. A quad cane is one step above a single point cane and is very helpful when walking on uneven surfaces
Crutches are great walking aids for users with temporary disability. Crutches come in many sizes and often can be adjusted.
Standard crutches come in wood or aluminum. These crutches are used on temporary basis for a leg, knee, ankle, or foot injury. They come in different sizes and are adjustable in height.
Forearm crutches attach a cuff to your forearm and have grips for your hands, for those that need extra support and stability when walking. Typically forearm crutches are for users who need them on longer time basis.
We carry many accessories that you can add to your walker such as standard glides, tennis ball glides, plastic trays, bags for your personal belongings, etc.
Determining the Walking Aid You Need
Before purchasing a walking aid be sure to keep the following considerations in mind.
Height of the user - If the walking aid is too low, it will encourage bad posture. Many walking aids have the ability to adjust for height considerations.
Weight of the user - If the walking aid can't support the user than it is virtually useless. Make sure to verify the maximum weight capacity.
Handgrips - Most walking aids have either molded plastic or foam rubber handgrips.
The Frame - Most of the frames you'll see on a walker or rollator are made from aluminum or steel. Aluminum is light weight and steel is heavy duty.
Wheels Size - The wheels of your walking aid can be large or small. The larger they are the easier it is to get over tougher obstacles. Smaller wheels are more suited for indoor use. Wheels can also be fixed or have a swivel.
Brakes - There are three types of breaks: Pressure, cable, and locking.
Indoor vs. Outdoor - A 4 wheel walker for outdoors and a 3 wheel Rollator for indoor use.
The key to better mobility and safety is correctly matching the walking aid to the user's needs, abilities, limitations, and environment
